If you are considering an abortion, or you have already had one, it is natural to wonder what it means for your fertility and your ability to carry a healthy pregnancy later.

These are important questions, and you deserve accurate answers before and after any decision.

At Pathways Clinic, we walk with women through those questions in a safe, confidential space.

Keep reading to understand how abortion can affect your body, how soon fertility returns, and what to watch for as you protect your reproductive health.

How Abortion Affects the Body

There are two main types of abortion, and each works differently.

A medical abortion uses two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone so the pregnancy detaches from the uterine lining, and misoprostol causes contractions that expel the pregnancy from the uterus.

A surgical abortion is a procedure in which a provider dilates the cervix and then inserts surgical instruments and/or a suction device into the uterus to remove the pregnancy and related tissue.

How Soon Can Fertility Return?

Sooner than many women expect.

After a medical abortion, ovulation can occur about three weeks later, often before your first period comes back.

That means you can become pregnant again quickly, sometimes within the same cycle.

Risks That Can Affect Future Pregnancies

Fertility returns quickly for many women, yet abortion carries risks that can shape later pregnancies.

Both medical and surgical abortions carry their own concerns for your reproductive health. For example, both types of abortion can result in an incomplete abortion; this is when parts of the pregnancy remain in the uterus and, left untreated, can cause an infection that can damage the fallopian tubes and affect future fertility.
